The Plums are Ripe

One of the few trees that I didn’t plant in my yard is this plum tree.  It was here when we moved in.  They’re small plums with a red flesh, cherry plums, I’m guessing.  In previous years the skins have been bitter and tough, not so good to eat.  Mostly, they just made a mess by falling and smashing on the walk on the side of the house.

Last year I decided I needed to do something with them rather than let them rot so I cut them in half and pitted them.  Then I dehydrated them.  I had no idea if they would taste any better dehydrated, but I thought it was worth a try.   I had just bought a dehydrator so I wanted to put it to work.  Well, they were really good.  They tasted similar to tart cherries.  Perfect for snacking or adding to a trail mix.

This year, however, they’re very sweet.  I don’t ever remember them tasting this good.  Maybe it was all that cool weather we’ve had, up until last week.  I don’t know, but they taste good!  I’m trying to decide what to do with them.  Plum cake?  Plum jam?  Plum sauce?  I’m hoping one of you will have a suggestion.....let me know what you would do with them....
